It’s the most wonderful time of the year. The first of December means only one thing around here, the start of another 24 days of great free music downloads from our favourite artists on The Joyzine Advent Calendar – this will be our eleventh consecutive year and we’ve got some very special treats in store for you, so keep checking back for your daily dose of festive joy.
We’re kicking off the 2016 edition with tracks by two calendar favourites – Piney Gir and MJ Hibbett & The Validators have featured on almost every calendar we’ve run, and we’re delighted to welcome them back again this year.
It’s been a busy year for Piney Gir, who released her sixth album mR. hYDE’S wILD rIDE on the always excellent Damaged Goods Records in the summer, followed by a collection of Halloween-themed tracks for the Everyday Witch EP. Along with a string of live shows around the UK, a special screening of a selection of her excellent b-movie tinged music videos was held in Hackney last month. And she’s not quite done yet, with one final show at The Hospital Club in Covent Garden still to come on 11th December.
To get this year’s calendar off to the best possible start, Piney has plundered her seemingly inexhaustible supply of festive tunes to bring you this excellent version of ‘Rootin’ Tootin’ Santa Claus‘.
MJ Hibbett (both with and without his band The Validators) has got a pretty hefty festive repertoire himself, indeed his Christmas Selection Box album makes a fine soundtrack to your yuletide celebrations. However, this year he’s opted for something a little less seasonal but equally splendid with an exclusive cover of Prolapse’s ‘Deanshanger’ which you can download here.
MJ spent much of 2015 touring his time-travelling comedy musical stage show Hey, Hey 16k, which we were lucky enough to catch at The Croydon Comedy Festival before it headed of for a successful run in Edinburgh.
MJ Hibbett plays a special Christmas set at Totally Acoustic at The King & Queen in Central London on 3rd December.
