Single Review: Swine Tax – Screensaver

Newcastle’s Swine Tax return with their brilliant new single ‘Screensaver’. With the recent addition of Euan Lynn on synth, ‘Screensaver’ sees Swine Tax further sharpen their agitated, hooky post-punk sound. Formed in Newcastle upon Tyne, Swine Tax is the creative voice of Vince (lead vocals and guitar), TK (bass), Charlie (drums) and Euan (synth and guitar).

They are a dedicated and close-knit group, who are well-known for their independent ethos and who have immersed themselves in their home city’s thriving DIY culture and have cultivated a reputation for cacophonous and high-energy live music performances.

Receiving plays from BBC’s Tom Robinson and Steve Lamacq has helped the band immensely, and with various festival appearances and a UK tour curtailed in light of the Covid-19 crisis, Swine Tax will look to pick up where they left off with rescheduled tour dates in support of their upcoming release.

The video directed by drummer Charlie Radford in a fit of lockdown induced cabin fever, takes the viewer on a cut-and-paste nightmare ride through zoom quizzes, online ads and daily briefings.

It’s no secret that I’m a massive fan of this band. I have reviewed several of their singles, from their debut right up to this one. This band have a work ethos and a song-writing intelligence I’ve rarely seen in other bands.

‘Screensaver’ is yet again another slice of unbridled pop post punk loveliness that is chaotic (did you hear the guitar solo?!?), yet its melodic and tuneful. The production is tight and the sound is big and professional. This isn’t some lo-fi bedroom/garage affair. Swine Tax have always reached for greatness and they are finally achieving it. The video is incredibly well produced and is absolutely hilarious. How they managed to do this on a shoestring I will never know. Just brilliant!

I absolutely love Swine Tax and with the addition of Euan on synth and guitar, this only brings the band to a new level of gorgeousness that I never knew existed. And the fact that the band realised they needed this addition just cements my suspicion that Swine Tax aren’t of this world.

Watch the video, buy the single and indulge yourself in Swine Tax. It will change your life for the better.

Swine Tax’s ‘Screensaver’ is out now available on all streaming services. Rescheduled Tour Dates TBC shortly.
