Live In Lockdown #3: Young Southpaw

Over the coming weeks Joyzine is presenting a series of live sessions recorded in lockdown by bands and artists from the UK and beyond.

We’re supporting The Music Venue Trust‘s Grassroots Venue Crisis Fund which aims to save more than 550 venues currently at risk of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Please consider making a donation here

Our second session comes from American surrealist comedian Young Southpaw.  We spoke with him to find out how he’s coping with life on lockdown.

For anyone that’s not heard you before, give us a quick introduction to Young Southpaw:

I think popbollocks.com summed Southpaw up best with: “From the existential thread that ties Jean-Paul Sartre to Jon Bon Jovi, to the skinny on what’s floating in TLC’s ‘Waterfalls’, and the possibility that Al Pacino is coaching boxing kangaroos in space, wise-fool Southpaw’s ramblings lead listeners on a surreal journey through doors they didn’t even know existed, into a highly original, deeply funny land of pop culture confusion.”

How has the lockdown affected you?

Lockdown has been quite disruptive and stressful. I agree 100% that everyone should be staying at home and social distancing. Though for myself this came while I was moving to Los Angeles from the East Coast. So I’ve been sheltering-in-place in Idaho. Trying to find a place to live was stressful and the worries continue as the residents here don’t seem to be paying any attention to the official stay-at-home order or any safety guidelines.

What have you been up to during the lockdown?

I have been working on a couple Southpaw albums that will feature musical accompaniment by various friends. I’ve continued to work on my Etcetera ETC with Young Southpaw podcast, the last episode featured an excellent conversation with Mikey Georgeson about the new David Devant & His Spirit Wife album. I’ve just recorded a fun episode with The Indelicates that should be out any day now. And I’m continuing to write for the Young Southpaw Part Of An Hour podcast. I also recorded an Instagram streaming gig which was a lot of fun, you can find that at YouTube now – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a49ZXhTm3y0 – as well as my thoughts on how the Dirty Dancing soundtrack has never sat well with me – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Udt1q7Sw8yE

We’re raising money for The Music Venue Trust’s crisis fund for grassroots venues – is there a venue that’s been particularly important to you?

I was supposed to be performing at 2Northdown on March 30th which obviously didn’t happen. A comedy club but I’d like to mention them https://www.2northdown.com/ . The whole reason I was coming to the UK was to finally see my favourite Sarah Records band, Even As We Speak, at The Lexington. I’ve had a lot of great times at The Lex over the years. I’d also like to give a shout out to Paper Dress Vintage
