Video of the Day: KOKOKO! – Tongos’a

Following yesterday’s interview with Thomas Truax, we’re well in the mood for musicians crafting their own instruments, and whilst KOKOKO!, from Kinshasa in The Democratic Republic of Congo might have little in common in terms of sound or background with Wowtown’s resident inventor, they share a spirit of ingenuity.

Created using their own DIY-constructed instruments, ‘Tongos’a’ is a wiry, snaking groove that boils down post-punk and traditional Cogolese influences (the bassline is taken from a traditional folkloric pattern of the Mongo tribe) to create something fresh and lithe.

The band’s second EP will be released later in the year and they’ll also be touring Europe, including a residency at the London Jazz Festival.
