The Joyzine Advent Calendar – Day 13 of free downloads from our favourite artists

We’ve passed the halfway mark as we open window 13 of the Joyzine Advent Calendar.

The news in 2016 has been categorised by many things, chief amongst them the crisis in Syria, the rise of right-wing politics across the Western world and a remarkable number of deaths of iconic celebrities, including a number of legends from the world of music: David Bowie, Prince, Alan Vega, George Martin and Leonard Cohen amongst them, and we were also faced with the tragic death of promising indie band Viola Beach in a traffic accident whilst on tour in Sweden.

Tributes have poured in from across the world of music, and we have one for you as today’s free advent calendar download.

Arrows of Love made their return earlier this year with their first new recordings since 2014’s debut Everything’s Fucked LP – new singles ‘Toad’ and ‘Beast’ getting us salivating in anticipation of the release of their second album in 2017.

The band played a gloriously chaotic single launch at The Lexington last week – by the end of the night guitars had been broken, half of the band had been in the crowd and their instruments passed around the front row.  They’ll begin 2017 as headliners of the 3-day Night Terrors ‘Bleakender’ festival – the free entry event takes place from 5th – 7th January at The Shacklewell Arms in Dalston.

They’ve also found themselves unexpectedly thrown into the midst of local politics following the London Legacy Development Corporation’s plans to demolish creative community hub Vittoria Wharf in Hackney Wick to make way for a new foot bridge.  The band have been a big part of the Save Hackney Wick campaign that has protested the move, and despite the residents and businesses of the Wharf being forcibly evicted earlier in the year, they continue to challenge the decision.  Find out more about the campaign, and its alternative proposal for the site at savehackneywick.org

For today’s advent calendar track, Arrows of Love have provided a touching tribute to legendary Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen, with a cover of his track ‘Famous Blue Raincoat’.
