We’ve made it to day four of the Joyzine Advent Calendar and for today’s double helping of free musical delights we’re heading to our spiritual homeland of South East London – Joyzine’s predecessor, the impassioned and charmingly amateurish Kaytronika (RIP), was dreamt up whilst I was living in Elephant & Castle and Joyzine itself really took off when we started covering the bands centred around The Paradise Bar (RIP also) in New Cross. Both wards are represented today.
Track #1: Elephants & Castles – Concrete Love (acoustic)
Wearing their postcode on their sleeve, alt-pop-folk duo (and from time to time trio with added clarinet) Elephants & Castles release their new EP ‘What’s Left for Larry & Janet’ tomorrow – a touching tale of the deeply personal consequences of urban regeneration that sticks two fingers up at gentrification. They host a launch party for the EP tonight at Deptford Cinema.
They’ve provided an acoustic version of EP track ‘Concrete Love’, an ode to the oft maligned brutalist architecture of Erno Goldfinger.
Also released tomorrow is ‘Here’s To You, Christmas!’, the brand new Christmas single from country punk duo Rhiannon the Nightmare, who’ve been mixing up the grit and spit of New Cross with the country heartbreak of Nashville to great effect with their new three-part show based on drinking, love and heartbreak.
They’ll be joining us on Wednesday’s edition of The Joyzine Radio Show, so tune in at croydonradio.com from 7pm if you’d like to hear more, including the new single.
Today, we have an exclusive unreleased track ‘Mirabelle’ for your listening pleasure.
Check back tomorrow for more great free music.
