This Sunday, the giants of rock will clash on the fields of Mile End. Many will enter, only one will leave standing tall… (or something equally overblown like they do in proper football previews on the tele.)
It’s a pretty simple equation: Music is great. Football is great. Festivals are great. Put them together and you have Soccer Six, a fun charity football tournament in which the teams are made up of musicians, with loads of food and booze on offer and a live music after party.
This year’s event takes place at Mile End Stadium on Sunday 6th September and features the likes of The Darkness, The Enemy, Reverend & The Makers and, erm… us.
Yes, Team Joyzine will be taking to the pitch to defend the honour of all things indie (and garage rock-y) and have put together a team of some of our favourite footballing band members (and Joyzine Radio DJ Paul Maps), so without further ado, here is the Joyzine line-up:

All three members of ace Medway punks Mourning Birds will be pulling on the Team Joyzine shirt:
Name: Jimmy Gilder
Supports: Crystal Palace
Position: Full back
Finest Footballing Moment: Once managed to play a whole match whilst eating a can of baked beans.
Name: Bill Williams
Supports: Leeds United
Position: Utility player
Finest Footballing Moment: Twice winner of ‘Most Improved Player of the Year’ (you’re rubbish but everybody deserves a trophy) and once winner of ‘Players Player of the Year’ (you’re rubbish but we like you). Previously played as a Winger, Right Back, Anchor Man and chief orange carrier. First player in the Medway League to be carded and fined for ‘Over celebrating’ causing a 20 minute delay in a game with an impromptu conga.
Name: Sam Mitchell
Supports: Aston Villa
Finest Footballing Moment: Always good for a goal or six
Mourning Birds play Nambucca on Holloway Rd on Saturday 5th September along with Towers of London and Lost FIlm Foundation.
Name: ‘Chopper’ Chris Anderson
Supports: West Ham United
Position: Defender (unless I can’t get back from an attack then I’m a striker)
Finest Footballing Moment: Playing (well showing up) for Team Joyzine at soccer Six 2015
Elephants & Castles took the summer off for non-musical stuff but are back this Autumn with a series of acoustic(ish) shows:
Sat 5th Sept – The Good Ship – Kilburn
Sat 26th Sept – Elefest 2015 – Elephant and Castle
Thu 1st Oct – New Cross Inn – New Cross
Frontman of country-tinged rockabilly quartet Sweetheart Contract and the first person ever to appear as a guest on The Joyzine Radio Show twice, Dexy will be keeping the goals out for Team Joyzine on Sunday.
Supports: AS Roma and Poland
Finest Footballing Moment: Getting presented with a player of the year award by Eddie Howe. Or nicking some biscuits from Neville Southall. It’s a long story.
Sweetheart Contract’s single ‘Don’t Operate / The ’85 Bears’ is out now via 3 Minute Records – you can get it on iTunes, Google Play and Spotify. Check out the video – it has bears. A new single will be released soon.
Dexy plays a solo show at Nambucca on 15th September.
Name: Rob Carmier
Supports: Brighton & Hove Albion
Position: Goalkeeper/Right-back if forced
Finest Footballing Moment: Having Sami Hyypiä explain to me last year over post-match dinner together in the manager’s lounge exactly why he wasn’t going to ‘just sign Di Maria and send Craig Mackail-Smith on loan to Real Madrid or something’.
Flash Bang Band are currently writing new material but will be popping up at the Cowley Club in Brighton on Tuesday the 8th of September to play with German friends Jealousy Mountain Duo.
Name: Josh Carson
Finest Footballing Moment: I scored a hat trick once against some naff Kent team, pretty good achievement for a right back. Never saw Gary Neville doing that.
Both Lost Film Foundation and The Dredgermen have new albums recorded and ready for release in the near future.
Lost FIlm Foundation play Nambucca with Towers of London and Mourning Birds on Saturday 5th September and will be our special guests on The Joyzine Radio Show on Wednesday 9th September.
Name: Paul Maps
Finest Footballing Moment: Either scoring a penalty against Kasey Keller at a Junior Lions Fun Day, or leading a team to the Wandsworth Under 11 Girls’ Champions League title (as a manager, not player just to be clear).
